DVCAM was Sony's professional answer to the DV revolution — used by broadcast journalists, documentary filmmakers, and event videographers worldwide. Those tapes hold some of the sharpest SD video of their era. Let Scan5 transfer them to modern digital files before the cassettes and the cameras are both gone.

DVCAM tapes use a locked-audio, narrower track pitch variant of the DV format — requiring dedicated DVCAM decks for proper playback. Using a standard MiniDV camcorder to play DVCAM tapes risks misreads and audio sync drift. At Scan5, we use professional DVCAM decks with FireWire (IEEE 1394) or SDI output to capture content digitally without any generation loss.
Because DVCAM is a native digital format, transfers via FireWire are lossless — you receive a bit-for-bit copy of the original tape's digital content. Our technicians review every tape before playback and monitor output in real time to ensure the best possible result.
Introduced by Sony in 1996, DVCAM is a professional variant of the DV (Digital Video) format used in consumer MiniDV camcorders. DVCAM uses the same 25 Mbps compression but records at a faster tape speed with locked audio and narrower tracks for improved reliability in professional production environments. It was widely adopted by broadcast journalists, documentary filmmakers, independent producers, and event videographers throughout the late 1990s and 2000s.
DVCAM tapes come in large (standard) and small (Mini DVCAM) cassette sizes. Large DVCAM cassettes can hold up to 184 minutes of footage. We accept both cassette sizes, as well as standard MiniDV tapes that may have been recorded in DVCAM mode — a common source of confusion.

We deliver DVCAM transfers in formats ranging from direct lossless captures to edited MP4s, depending on your intended use.
Widely compatible files at high bitrates, suitable for online sharing, client delivery, and archiving. Easy to view on any device without special software.
Lossless DV capture via FireWire delivers a bit-for-bit copy of the tape. ProRes wrapping makes the footage immediately ready for NLE editing workflows.
MXF or other broadcast-wrapped formats for institutional archives and post-production workflows that require professional container formats.
DVCAM tapes can suffer from dropout, mold, sticky shed, and physical damage. We assess every tape before playback to ensure the best possible result.
We clean and inspect every DVCAM tape before playback and can address sticky shed, mold, and physical cassette damage. Tapes showing signs of binder degradation are treated before transfer to protect both the content and our equipment.
After transfer, we can trim, organize, and prepare your DVCAM footage for delivery. We can split by scene, timecode, or tape and deliver files organized exactly as you need them.
Once your DVCAM tapes are digitized, you have flexible options for how to store and access your files.
We've digitized DVCAM collections for documentary filmmakers, news organizations, event videographers, and families across the Chicago area.
Documentary footage, event recordings, news packages, and corporate video — DVCAM tapes often contain the original master recordings of important work that deserves proper preservation.

DVCAM and MiniDV use the same DV compression and image quality, but DVCAM records at a faster tape speed (locked audio, narrower tracks) for improved reliability in professional production. DVCAM tapes can be played back in DVCAM decks; some footage recorded in DVCAM mode was recorded onto standard MiniDV cassettes. We can handle both.
Yes. We handle both the large standard DVCAM cassette and the smaller Mini DVCAM cassette size. Large cassettes can hold up to 184 minutes of footage.
When transferred via FireWire (IEEE 1394), DVCAM captures are lossless — the digital data is copied directly from the tape without any re-encoding or quality loss. The resulting file is a bit-for-bit replica of the original recording.
We offer native DV capture (lossless), ProRes or DNxHD for editing workflows, high-quality MP4 for sharing and archiving, and MXF for broadcast and institutional use. We can accommodate most professional delivery specifications.
We assess every tape before playback and can address mold, binder degradation, and physical cassette issues in-house before transfer. Severe dropout from tape damage cannot always be corrected, but we'll let you know what to expect before charging a full transfer fee.
You can drop off at our Chicago studio at 4001 N Ravenswood Ave Suite 502-B, schedule a courier pickup, or ship your tapes to us (we provide a prepaid label upon request).
