Hi8 tapes require specific Sony-compatible playback decks to get a proper transfer — and aging camcorders or consumer decks frequently introduce tracking errors, picture noise, and audio sync problems. At Scan5, we use professional Hi8 and Video8 playback equipment with time-base correction to deliver the cleanest possible transfer from your tapes.
We also handle Digital8 tapes, which store digital video data on the same physical cassette. Our technicians review each tape's condition and adjust settings for optimal results before beginning any transfer.
Introduced by Sony in 1989, Hi8 offered a significant improvement in picture quality over the earlier Video8 format — and became one of the most popular camcorder formats of the 1990s. Hi8 camcorders were beloved for their compact size and sharp, vibrant image quality. The related Digital8 format, introduced in 1999, stored fully digital video data on the same Hi8/Video8 cassettes.
Because Hi8 and Video8 tapes use the 8mm form factor, they can only be played in specific Sony camcorders or decks. As these devices age and become harder to find, many families lose the ability to watch their recordings entirely — making professional digitization the safest path forward.

Yes. We can repair broken cassette shells, fix torn or tangled ribbons, and remove mold in-house before transferring. We'll notify you if a tape is too damaged to transfer and will never charge full price for content that cannot be reasonably viewed.
We offer standard MP4 for everyday viewing, high-quality MP4 for maximum fidelity, and professional archival formats (ProRes, DNxHD) for editors and archivists.
