Yes. We transfer both silent Super 8 and Magnetic Sound Super 8. Sound Super 8 has a thin magnetic stripe along the edge of the film that carries the audio. We capture both the image and the sound track simultaneously during the scan.
Film degrades from heat, humidity, and the natural aging of the film base. Many Super 8 reels are now 40–60 years old and actively losing quality. Vinegar syndrome (a vinegar smell) indicates advanced deterioration that accelerates rapidly. The sooner you digitize, the better the result.
We recommend 2K for most Super 8 transfers — it captures the full detail of the film frame and provides a beautiful, future-proof digital master. 4K is available for the highest-quality archival result or for large-screen projection use.
Drop off at our Chicago studio (4001 N Ravenswood Ave Suite 502-B), schedule a courier pickup, or ship your reels to us with a prepaid UPS label. We recommend shipping in original film cans or plastic cases with bubble wrap padding.
