Super 8 is the most beloved home movie format ever made — its warm, cinematic look is unlike anything else. Scan5 digitizes your Super 8 reels frame-by-frame using the same Hollywood-grade technology that restored The Godfather, delivering breathtaking digital transfers that honor your film's original beauty.

At Scan5, we use the industry-leading Lasergraphics™ film scanner — the same technology trusted by major film studios and archives worldwide. Our scanner captures your Super 8 film frame-by-frame at resolutions up to 4K, preserving every grain, every color, and every nuance of the original footage.
Because Super 8 has a larger frame area than Standard 8mm, it holds more detail — and our scanner extracts every bit of it. The result is a digital transfer that is often noticeably sharper and more beautiful than the original projector screenings your family remembers.
Kodak introduced Super 8 in 1965 with a revolutionary cartridge-loading system that made home filmmaking easier than ever. Its larger frame (40% more image area than Standard 8mm) and smaller sprocket holes deliver a beautifully cinematic image that has made Super 8 a beloved format among filmmakers and families alike — even today.
Super 8 was produced in both silent and sound variants (Magnetic Sound Super 8). Most reels run 3–7 minutes per reel. We transfer both silent and sound Super 8, preserving your audio alongside your image.

Super 8, introduced in 1965, has a larger frame area and smaller sprocket holes compared to Standard 8mm (Regular 8). This gives Super 8 approximately 40% more image area, resulting in sharper, more detailed footage. Super 8 also came in a convenient cartridge format that made loading the camera much easier.
Yes. We transfer both silent Super 8 and Magnetic Sound Super 8. Sound Super 8 has a thin magnetic stripe along the edge of the film that carries the audio. We capture both the image and the sound track simultaneously during the scan.
Film degrades from heat, humidity, and the natural aging of the film base. Many Super 8 reels are now 40–60 years old and actively losing quality. Vinegar syndrome (a vinegar smell) indicates advanced deterioration that accelerates rapidly. The sooner you digitize, the better the result.
We recommend 2K for most Super 8 transfers — it captures the full detail of the film frame and provides a beautiful, future-proof digital master. 4K is available for the highest-quality archival result or for large-screen projection use.
