How Scan5 Digitizes Framed Artwork with Overhead DSLR Capture and Traditional Photography

At Scan5, we specialize in the art of preservation—transforming original, often irreplaceable artwork into high-resolution digital files without compromising on detail, color, or integrity. When it comes to digitizing framed artwork, we combine precision equipment with time-tested photography techniques to deliver stunning results.

Why Digitize Framed Artwork?

Artists, collectors, and galleries often need high-quality digital versions of framed pieces for portfolios, archival records, online galleries, and reproduction. But framed artwork presents unique challenges: glare from glass, shadows from frames, and the difficulty of removing art from fragile or sealed mounts.

Our solution? A professional setup using an overhead DSLR camera mounted on a copy stand, along with controlled lighting techniques rooted in traditional studio photography.

The Scan5 Digitization Process

1. Copy Stand with Overhead DSLR

We start with a solid foundation: a copy stand fitted with a high-resolution DSLR camera mounted overhead. This vertical setup ensures perfect alignment and minimizes distortion. It also allows us to photograph the artwork in situ, which is especially useful for fragile or permanently framed pieces.

Our typical setup includes:

  • Full-frame DSLR (Canon EOS or Nikon FX series)
  • Prime macro lenses for edge-to-edge sharpness
  • Remote shutter release to prevent vibration
  • Bubble level and focus calibration tools

This combination delivers razor-sharp images with exceptional detail—even capturing subtle brushwork or canvas texture.

2. Controlled Lighting for Glare-Free Results

Lighting is the most critical aspect of digitizing framed artwork. Glass reflections and shadow from the frame are common issues. To address this, we use angled soft lighting from both sides—typically placed at 45-degree angles to the artwork.

We may also:

  • Use polarizing filters on both lights and lens to reduce glare
  • Mask off reflective areas or shoot with the glass removed if possible
  • Employ flags and reflectors to balance exposure and eliminate hotspots

3. Traditional Photography Techniques

While our setup is digital, we follow classic photography principles to maintain tonal accuracy, depth, and realism. White balance is meticulously set using a gray card. We shoot RAW for maximum dynamic range, allowing precise post-processing.

During post-production, we:

  • Adjust exposure and contrast non-destructively
  • Apply lens corrections to eliminate any barrel or pincushion distortion
  • Match colors to the original artwork using color calibration tools

This traditional-meets-modern approach ensures every reproduction is faithful to the original.

4. Non-Destructive Workflow

Our process is 100% non-invasive. We don’t require the artwork to be unframed, touched, or altered in any way. This is especially important for:

  • Historical works in delicate condition
  • Sealed frames with archival mounts
  • High-value or irreplaceable pieces
